Engine room

ON943 is fitted with twin handed Gardner 6LW engines. They were ordered as a handed pair, serial numbers 115372 and 115373. They are coupled to Gardner 2UC reversing gearboxes and 2UC 2:1 reduction gearboxes.
They drive 32" handed propellors which are protected in tunnels. The fuel pumps are set to give a maximum of 72 bhp at 1200 rpm on both engines.
Cruising speed is nearly 8 knots at 900 rpm and full speed of 9 knots needs a clean bottom and shiny propellors to let the engines pull their full 1200 rpm.

Each engine draws from its own 120 gallon fuel tank and the tanks can be cross coupled.

There are two banks of 24V batteries which are located in a fan-ventilated box in the forward cabin. The P&S battery systems can be cross coupled. They are separately charged from their own engine-driven alternators.

ON943 doesn't seem to have ever been fitted with a generator in the engine room.

On the engine room coachroof she still carries her original anchor cable winch, driven from the port engine and the capstan driven from the starboard engine. The anchor winch has capacity for 100 fathoms of 5/8" wire and two 110 lb anchors are carried on catting davits.
